Some common intervention techniques followed by different Special Educators to help out children having learning difficulties may include various treatments in the following spheres –
– Special teaching techniques include helping a child learn multisensory experiences and keeping separate sessions for giving immediate feedback. All these techniques help the child to recognise various words better and faster.
– Special tools used by teachers include conducting oral exams and organising sessions for the child to videotape the reports instead of writing them down.
– Visual techniques are used by trained teachers, such as drawing pictures of word problems and teaching the students to use colour pencils to differentiate between various parts of problems.
– Some memory aids like rhymes and music are also used to help a child memorise different math concepts.
Children with learning disabilities are often termed as ‘lazy’ and ‘naughty’, which in fact they are not. They usually have average or above average intelligence. It’s just that their brain process information differently. These kids can be as good in art, music, sports and other activities as the normal ones. They just need our full support and acceptance as this would help them become self-confident, and they would not feel isolated or backward than other children of the same age. These children can also do quite well academically in schools, if are taken proper care of.
A special educator for learning disability has a very vital role in the education of children with learning disabilities. Through a carefully designed individualized education plan (IEP), a special educator can help a child with learning disability to flourish academically.
