Lack of fine motor skills coupled with lack of spatial awareness and visual-discrimination as well as visual-perception in the developmental stage could often result in poor size and shape perception. Children, who face problems regarding the perception of shape and size, may face many learning difficulties. Around 40% of children with writing disorders have trouble with visual perception and hence size and shape. This could also affect memory of the children. The lack of awareness and perception of shape and size is often coupled with inattentiveness, loss of concentration, poor motor skills, loss of self-esteem and a slow progress when it comes to reading and writing.
Although most children suffer from this problem early on, it goes away gradually with development and experience. But if your child shows signs of difficulties in recognizing and perceiving shape and size even beyond the second grade, it is advisable to consult a doctor or therapist. Coupled with special education and occupational therapy, you could help your child rid of this problem.
In such a case it is most important to recognize and understand the child’s difficulty as soon as possible and not approach it negatively. Reprimanding your child and punishing him or her may adversely affect progress in your child. So take it easy, and consult a special aids teacher or therapist for help to overcome this problem.
