Normal Educational Milestone

While the physical growth of children can be easily determined using simple measurement, it becomes extremely difficult for parents to measure the child’s growth in some other areas like reading, learning, writing etc.

According to research, most children are able to read by the time they turn seven. A child’s acquisition of reading skills is indicative of various aspects that govern a child’s developmental well-being as far as learning and education is concerned. It is one of the most important normal education milestones for a child.

The acquisition of language and other learning skills start right from the child’s birth and involve a series of very complicated, yet amazing accomplishments that equip the child with the skills needed to learn.

In such a learning process, the age three is an important time in the child’s life. As by age three, the child should ideally be able to acquire and use certain skills, failing which could indicate certain difficulties and problems in the child’s developmental process. In that case you might need to get your child evaluated by an expert.

You child, by the age of three should be able to:

  • Respond to facial expressions and gestures

  • Utter sounds which imitate the various rhythms and tones that adults might use while talking

  • Takes part in games like ‘peek-a-boo’

  • Makes babbling and cooing sounds and tries to play rhyming word games albeit nonsense with familiar adults.

  • Start to associate with certain words that they get to hear frequently to what they really mean.

  • Start to handle objects well like picture books, or associative toys

  • Recognise some of the books by its cover

  • Imitate an adult reading a book

  • Figure out how books should be handled.

  • Gape at pictures in books and understand that they represent real things

  • Name or recognise some of the objects in the book

  • Hold conversations about various characters in the book

  • Listen to songs being sung or stories being read

  • Ask adults or demand that they write or read with them

  • Start paying attention to specific letters or print, for instance the first letter of their name

  • Try to write or draw something while scribbling

  • Produce shapes and forms in some way that resemble writing or drawing.

While different kids develop differently, by the ages 3-4 most children are able to pick up on the mentioned traits. If not, it could be due to various developmental disorders that might be hindering your child’s learning development.

For children who find trouble with the already mentioned normal education milestones, the parents are advised to consult a special educator, doctor, psychologist or therapist to help in the child’s development. The hindrance in your child’s learning abilities could be because of physical factors like hearing impairment, visual impairment and the likes. It could also be due to other disorders such as Dyslexia, Down syndrome, ADHD, and more. In such a case, an expert will be able to evaluate your child and provide real insights in to what you could do to help your child.

Once evaluated, the best way forward would be to enrol your child in a special education curriculum where the child will have access to a special educator, psychologist, counsellor, doctors, occupational therapists, special therapists and special equipment and tools. Since special education first identifies a child’s specific needs before formulating a curriculum for the child’s learning, special education helps many children with developmental and learning disorders cope up with their difficulties by bridging the gap between them and other children. Every year thousands of special needs children are able to develop and grow in par with other children with the help of special education. If your child is facing such difficulties, special education would be an advisable choice.
