The lack of colour conception in children may happen due to various reasons. It could be due to lack in cognitive understanding though with proper aid and therapy a child can overcome that easily. But a condition which happens due to a physical developmental anomaly could be colour blindness, which results in the lack of colour vision. Colour deficiency makes it difficult to distinguish or identify certain colours. Most of the time it is a hereditary disorder and is passed on from parent to child and is mostly present right from birth. Sometimes it develops later in life.
Most people with colour vision deficiency have difficulty in distinguishing between various shades of green, yellow and red.
A person with a deficiency in colour vision may face many problems in day to day life. For instance he or she may not be able to distinguish between fresh and stale food based on colour or understand traffic signals. But in children at the developmental state it hinders their cognitive as well as psychological growth. Such children, due to lack in colour conception, often experience various other psychological problems like low self-esteem among peer group, attention deficit, communication problems and more.
Since there is no cure for inherited ‘colour blindness’, it would help your child if you inform his or her school and manage to adapt the learning materials to suit your child’s needs. Though this seems farfetched many schools readily help.
But otherwise you could approach special needs schools, wherein there will be many other children with similar problems. This will greatly help you child adapt to the lack of colour perception. Therapy may help children cope with the psychological effects of the deficiency. Some special aids school also uses specialized computers and other technology to monitor and teach students with a lack of colour conception. This helps the students a lot. Special educators can help the students develop insight into visual association which will help them immensely. Since special educators have the required training to meet specific objectives and needs in a special aid child’s developmental process, they not only are able to help the child overcome their difficulties by introducing special curriculums in school but they are also able to gauge and understand minute changes in their behavior, which helps them formulate special activities and learning environments for each child’s individual needs.
