Once a child is identified as possibly needing special education usually the Special Educator assesses the child on the following domains viz. motor development, speech and language development, cognitive development, educational development and social development.

Assessment in Special Education

Once a child is identified as possibly needing special education usually the Special Educator assesses the child on the following domains viz. motor development, speech and language development, cognitive development, educational development and social development.

Usually assessment is the first basic step in the special education process of the child. The special educator seeks to answer the following questions:

  • What are the child’s precise needs for education?

  • What special educational services and related services are appropriate for fulfilling these needs?


Once these following questions are answered the special educators develops an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and then intervention follows.

Usually the following test is used to assess the overall development of the child Portage Scale of Early Education.
